Suppose a man prayed for X. Suppose he prayed night and day without ceasing, without fail. Suppose he fasted as well. Suppose he was "violent"
in prayer, confident that X was the will of God. Suppose it was an impossible situation. And suppose that X, the impossible goal, was achieved. He rejoices in answered prayer. He thanks God profusely, every day even.
Suppose further that years later he discovers that X was contrary to the Word of God, without any doubt.
Did God answer his prayer, in giving him X? What happened?

Actually, sometimes I think God does give us what he keep pestering Him for, even if it's not what He wants. He gave the children of Israel a king because they kept after Him, asking for one. He knew it wasn't best for them, but because of their persistence, He let them have one. It was trouble from there on out. That's why you have to make sure you are praying according to His will, not yours.

Well, I'm talking about where a person is confident something is the will of God, which they pray for, then they find out much later (after their prayer being "answered") that it was not the will of God.
Wouldn't God refuse to give us what we ask if it is contrary to His will, even though at the time we are not aware it is against His will?

Doesn't God look after His children?
Sure, but God loved the children of Israel too, and He gave them something against His will. I've known of people who prayed for a specific husband or wife that they just "knew" was the right one for them. They finally got them, praising God all the way to the altar, and then later found out that they were AWFUL and not at all what they thought. Did God let them have their way?? Maybe, I don't know.

Ah, suppose a man married a woman, and she turned out to be bad news, and left him, wrecking their home (children and all). Suppose the man got upset, and decided the devil would NOT have his family. Suppose the man asked God for wisdom, and sought direction.
And suppose the man prayed for God's will to be done. And suppose the man became convinced that it is not God's will for families to be wrecked, that God was against divorce, and preferred reconciliation if at all possible.
And suppose the wife was utterly opposed to reconciliation.
And suppose after weeks of praying and fasting for God's will to be done, she came back, in repentance and tears.
And suppose afterwards she got the Holy Ghost.
And suppose after that they had a couple more children.
And suppose they were living happily ever after...
And suppose the man later discovered that his marriage was in fact illegitimate.
And so now he wonders where was God in all this?
This situation was presented to me recently, and frankly I have no idea how to respond. The brother is just about ready to backslide over this.

Illegitimate? Was she also married to someone else?
I don't have answers to things like this. Life happens, and sometimes bad things come to God's people too. It's just one of those times when a person has to say "I love God because of who He is, and that has not changed."

It is time to pray again.

Psa 106:14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. Psa 106:15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.
God will sometimes let us have what we desire, but will allow leaness to our souls.
