Jesus' Distinctive

Isaiah 53:1 - 2 (KJV) 1 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

What were the things that made Jesus distinct?
What really drew the crowds to Him?

Isaiah leads me to believe that Jesus was an ordinary looking man. The gospels seem to give a nod to this by mentioning how Jesus just melted into the crowd when the Pharisees and Sadducees would look for Him with malicious intent. If he looked like the rest of the crowd, what made him stand out in the crowd? What is it that should make us stand out in the crowd? While I firmly believe in holiness and modesty, I sometimes get the feeling that there are many of those in the Pentecostal ranks that identify more with an external appearance then they do with what's on the interior bringing a radiant glow of glory to the exterior. Is it a clean shaven face or a piled up hairdo? Nothing wrong with either, but our true distinctive ought to be the shine of the Holy Ghost from a life save by grace. If the world does not get a sense of His love exuding from us, all the outward appearance we can command and demand is for naught.

.
I always thought that meant Jesus was an ugly duckling.

Yet in one of the prophetic psalms ...

He is called the most fair .... the most handsome among the sons of men ...

The ESV translates Psalm 45:2 like I read it in the Spanish Reina Valera:

ESV:
2 You are(C) the most handsome of the sons of men;
(D) grace is poured upon your lips;
therefore God has blessed you forever.
3(E) Gird your(F) sword on your thigh, O(G) mighty one,
in(H) your splendor and majesty!

RVA:

2 Eres el más hermoso de los hijos de los hombres;
La gracia se derramó en tus labios;
Por tanto, Dios te ha bendecido para siempre.

Physically ordinary ... As my Savior the most beautiful!!!

Distinctive because of the Grace poured uponed him ....

Re: Jesus' Distinctive

DW ... another reason he was distinctive .... was ...

People marveled at Him because he spoke w/ authority.

Quote:
28When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
His disciples marveled also:

Quote:
What kind of man is he that even the wind and the sea obey him?

Re: Jesus' Distinctive

Clearly distinctive because of his supernatural power ...

Quote:
1Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named (A)Nicodemus, a (B)ruler of the Jews;
2this man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, "(C)Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these (D)signs that You do unless (E)God is with him."

Re: Jesus' Distinctive

Distinctive because of His mission:

While Israel awaited a liberator that would free them from the bondage of Rome ...

His mission was greater ...

to serve ... to die ... to save.

Quote:
For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost." (Luke 19:10)
Quote:
“Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant[3] is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them (John 13)
Quote:
6Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
and became obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2)
