SIN do you really know what it is???

Over a period of time I have noticed lots of threads calling first one thing and then another sin...I wonder what people really think sin is...

Re: SIN do you really know what it is???

I will start if off by using Old Testament scriptures

Deut. 30:16 In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it.
30:17 But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them;
30:18 I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it.

Sin is a condition of the heart, any outward manifestation is just a symptom of a spiritual condition. That is what I believe.

Re: SIN do you really know what it is???

In Proverbs 6:16 – 19, it is stated that "(16) These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:" (quotes from "King James Version (KJV)" translation of the Bible). These are:
(17) A proud look,
a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
(18) A heart that deviseth wicked imaginations,
feet that be swift in running to mischief,
(19) A false witness that speaketh lies,
and he that soweth discord among brethren

Galatians 5:19-21. That list reads: (19) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, (20) Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, (21) Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.(KJV)

Re: SIN do you really know what it is???

Sloth is not listed in Galatians, but it can be found in verses such as Proverbs 6:6-10 "How long will you sleep, O sluggard?". Laziness is addressed in many other verses, though not necessarily labeled obviously as sin. In 1 Corinthians 3:8, a man is to receive "according to his labors". Similarly in Timothy 5:18, a laborer is worthy of his wages, with the implied converse being that the sluggard is not entitled to be fed or rewarded. He sins in living off others' labors.

Re: SIN do you really know what it is???

I have noticed people get all worked up about things the Bible never mentions and things the Bible mentions is seldom addressed...It does not make me holier because my sleaves are long but it does make me holier not to lie...
and yes I do use sleaves in my dresses...I do my best to dress modest...but I am talking about people who are quick to judge about things the Bible leaves for us to decide.

Re: SIN do you really know what it is???

My answer to your original question is answered in the Westminster Larger Catechism;

Question 24: What is sin?

Answer: Sin is any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, any law of God, given as a rule to the reasonable creature.

I was going to reply to this earlier and my answer was pretty much the same as the one Ref. Dave gave - just a little more simple; namely that .........

Sin is transgression of God's law and God's Word which is basically one and the same.

Deut. 30:16: In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments...

In your posts, you've nailed down some of the specifics.

Re: SIN do you really know what it is???

To me sin is willful disobedience of God's laws.
