Detroit Bankruptcy Denied!!

Thank you, Judge Aquilina!

This should take the news cycle back again...unless Obama pre-empts the nightly news to re-deliver his remarks about TM.

Quote:
Ruling that the governor and Detroit’s emergency manager violated the state constitution, an Ingham County Circuit judge ordered Friday that Detroit’s federal bankruptcy filing be withdrawn.

“It’s absolutely needed,” said Judge Rosemary Aquilina, observing she hopes Gov. Rick Snyder “reads certain sections of the (Michigan) constitution and reconsiders his actions.”
Quote:
With rumors of eminent bankruptcy filing swirling Thurssday afternoon, attorneys representing the pension boards hurried into Aquilina’s court to ask for a restraining order. But Snyder and Orr beat them by a few minutes, filing to take Detroit into the largest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history.

Aquilina, who granted the restraining order, clearly was irked.

Prior to her ruling on Friday, she criticized the Snyder administration and Attorney General’s Office for what appeared to be hasty action to outflank pension board attorneys.

“It’s cheating, sir, and it’s cheating good people who work,” the judge told assistant Attorney General Brian Devlin. “It’s also not honoring the (United States) president, who took (Detroit’s auto companies) out of bankruptcy.”

Aquilina said she would make sure President Obama got a copy of her order.

“I know he’s watching this,” she said, predicting the president ultimately will have to take action to make sure existing pension commitments are honored.

Since when are Governors and Mayors supposed to "honor" the President???

This is golden!

And VP Biden comes in on cue:

Quote:
"Can we help Detroit?" Biden said on Friday in a response to a question from a reporter. "We don't know."
I love Bidenisms; they're just as good, if not better than Bushisms.

Quote:
White House spokesman Jay Carey dismissed a question of whether there could be a government bailout for the city, but shed little light on other "policy options" under consideration.

"I would point you to what we have said and what leaders in Michigan and Detroit have said, which is that on the matter of their insolvency, that's something for the city and the creditors to resolve," he told reporters.
Even Carney pretty much says the WH doesn't have a plan, and leaves it up to the Gov.

Re: Detroit Bankruptcy Denied!!

There's going to be an all-out war in Detroit between the Governor's admin and the unions. Bankruptcy will force the union to negotiate a reasonable rate, and remove any leverage they've had. There's no way they'll give it up without a fight....possibly even a literal one at that.

You have hit the nail on the head. Unions are too stupid to realize that the city can't pay money it does not have. They are also too stupid to realize they have been a big part of the problem.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Re: Detroit Bankruptcy Denied!!

Detroit owes 100,000 creditors $18.5 BILLION!

City pensions alone account for over $2 billion
Police and Fire retirement over $1.5 billion

Tell me again that Unions don't hurt the economy.

Quote:
...only a third of the city’s ambulances work, and police cars and fire trucks are also in poor condition. There are 78,000 abandoned buildings in the city and 40 per cent of the street lights do not work.
Welcome to Obama's America.
