I read the book "The Battlefield" about a year ago.
It was about a "board run" church, with PCI doctrine and liberal standards.
A pastor brought in Verbal Bean to try to straighten things out.
There were some real problems in that church that needed correcting.
Several people left the church. These folks had been controlling things and their leaving was good for the church. The church wound up with a single pastor ruling and controlling everything. He took all the tithes and was accountable to nobody. I have to wonder if that didn't result in another bad situation but just to the opposite extreme. Yes, there were water and Spirit baptisms and the overall numbers increased but didn't they wind up with just a different set of problems?
Bump
I am reading The Battlefield right now. All I can say is WOW!

The Battlefield book about Verbal Bean was horrible. I am sad and sorry I ever read it.
But I do have to admit that the old timers that I have met have told me stories like this before. The book accurately portrays some of the preaching of the time period of the 60's.
If you want to read a book about preaching of "Holy Ghost or Hell" this is the book. They sell this book at the Pentecostal Publishing House.
Just so everyone knows I am not bashing the UPCI. I have went to two UPCI churches before. Both pastors loved God and loved people. I deeply respected both men.

I heard the scummy pot message about 20 years, think I still have the tape. I think it is from the seventies which might explain the poor sound quality.

Blame the folks for the problems in the church, when the leaders are commissioned to "equip the saints". It is more an indictment of the leadership than of the folks that they are supposed to lead. Intimidate with fear of a monster god that if you fail to please will torture you endlessly in a custom built torture chamber. This god loves you, but the moment you die he will hate you with the greatest hate imaginable.
This is a god from the carnal and wicked hearts of men, nothing like the Creator of the universe that created the whole cosmos for His highest creation. This type of preaching, thankfully has been relegated to the dust bin of history. Maybe it functioned as a transition from the fear and control of the Roman state church, that enforced its edicts at the point of the sword. Now maybe man can find the path to love God from the heart and freewill, not coerced out of fear.

Anyway So I was reading this book and Mr. Bean is preaching one night. He (Bean) says that a man (visitor) said that
Mr Bean said "Just sit their you big old fat thing and go to Hell"
Mr Bean was mad because he was preaching real hard and he expected this visitor to come up and repent or scream or do something. Anyway when the visitor just sat their quietly Mr Bean decided that calling him a name and condemning him to Hell was probably a great way to help this visitor. (These are my comments on his actions)
Now Mr bean is recounting the story of what this other man said. He doesn't deny he said this. He (Bean) just doesn't remember saying it. But then (Bean) says that if the man (visitor) said he said it then it was probably true. And then Mr Bean goes on to have it published in a book. So evidently Mr Bean thinks this is a good example to all ministers.
Sorry for how choppy this post is but I wanted to accurately portray what was said in the book.

Were it not for the powerful fear of hell some preaching wouldn't have had any power at all. I remember quite a lot of this type of preaching. Not in the church I grew up in, but youth camps and campmeetings, etc.
