"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Yup. Other than some Pentecostal folks the most times I see the word 'Apostolic" used in reference to the church is from Roman Catholic sources.

Re: I Prefer Pentecostal

I would never call myself Apostolic to anyone unless I knew they were UPC or Oneness. I usually tell folks that I my smaller classification within the christian belief system is Pentecostal.

What, exactly, is "Apostolic" supposed to mean that is so preferable over "Pentecostal?"
well all I can say is, you didnt live in Dallas in the late 1990's we had "Pentecostals" running around here falling down acting goofy.

when I said I was pentecostal, they would say (while taking a step back) "you mean like Robert Tilton or Binny Hinn??????"

and I would have to clairify. So I ended that. Apostolic. What is that? great conversation would ensue. it worked for me.

these days, "Pentecostal" aint so bad anymore so i bounce between the two.

(Tilton is somewhere in Florida fleecing some other poor city)

I call myself Pentecostal here at work. My Episcopalian co-worker friend chimes in and tells folks that I handle snakes and swing from chandeliers! Of course, I counter and tell them that his church is the one that has gay priests!

I'm sure glad we've never had that problem.
