Video Cards Gone Bad!!!
I'm having a computer problem. I think it's my video card. In fact I'm pretty sure it is.
The other day I cut my desktop computer on (It's over a year old). I left it for about 5 minutes and came back and it was powered off. I tried to turn it on but it was getting no juice. I finally took my video card out just as a trial and to my suprise the computer booted up. In fact it's running right now. If I try to put the video card back then the whole computer still don't get power (Well the fans act like they start to turn for a split second). There is no burn marks or anything like that on the video card. So I'm still not perfectly sure that was the problem but it probably is.
Could it possibly be anything else like the power supply got old and doesn't supply enough power to run that massive card anymore or is it a guarantee that it's my videocard?

Re: Video Cards Gone Bad!!!
My first guess (of which I am nearly certain) is that it is the power supply. Does this card require an additional power connection to run? Or does it get all of its power from the PCI/AGP/PCIe slot?

Re: Video Cards Gone Bad!!!
My wife's PC is having major issues the past several weeks where it is suddenly not accepting her account password when she logs on. Lo and behold it is a power supply issue as well! She has a Gateway tower which contains a mere 300 watt supply but have a 550 one on order.

It could be the power supply. If it is not pumping out the right amount of watts it should to power the video card.

Re: Video Cards Gone Bad!!!
Yes the video card requires an extra power connection. It's a 500 watt power supply. It came with the case also. I've had the whole thing for about 1-1.5 years.
Like I said though, the computer works without the video card. (Onboard video) But as soon as I hook up the video card the thing won't even cut on. Is there any easy way to test whether its the power supply or the card?
On a side note the video card has it's own fan. It had started makin a whining noise a few days prior. But it seemed like it was just too close to the protective plate over top of it. So I loosened that up some and the whine mostly stopped. Computer ran fine that evening. Then it was either the next day or day after, I come home and turn the computer on and step away and 5 minutes later it's powered off and won't start up.

It could be the video card, it could also be the power supply as the onboard video does not use as much power as the card.
If the fan was not working right the card might have overheated. It does have a GPU in it. You could try unplugging the DVD players to cut power and see if the video card works.
Also make sure the Card is properly seated in the PCI slot

Speaking of video cards, my new Sapphire ATI 5850 is in the mail!
Then my current card -a 'still very good' ATI 4850 will go to my wife's machine which is currently using only Intel integrated graphics.

Re: Video Cards Gone Bad!!!
Well, I'll let yall know in a day or two. I talked to a guy I knew that has a computer shop. He said he'd check out the card. If I had another computer around here I would myself, but I don't. At least this will tell me if it's the card or not. If it's not then I guess it's still up in the air between the MOBO's PCI slot and the power supply.
