Early Methodists and Conversions

I had a great great great great grandfather in the American Methodist Episcopal church. In reading some biography I found that when someone "comes to Christ" that they were not encouraged to just accept they were saved at faith. Rather they were encouraged to seek God for some sort of experience that confirmed their salvation. Is it any wonder that early Methodists in many cases spoke in tongues and had other Pentecostal like experiences? Anyone else have knowledge of this?

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

They also had strict moral guidelines, and folks would refer to "going Methodist" in a slang conatation, according to some of the history I have read.

Re: Early Methodists and Conversions

I do know that they believed in holiness, and I think they believed in santification or the infilling of the Spirit of God, whether with tongues I am not sure.

And some used to get the "shakes" as it was called.

Oh, yes. This type of behavior by the Methodists is recorded in The New York Times.

....Well, look at the bottom of the page. That was quite a while ago.

Awesome. I love the reference to the mourners bench. Back then it was not a simple sinners prayer. You sought the Lord with tears
