Heritage of Faith
My uncle (father's brother) is visiting for a few days. Tonight I had the privilege to sit down with my father (84) and uncle (81) and listen to them tell stories of growing up. I learned a lot that I did not know about my father's side of the family. It was great to sit and listen to these two brothers reminisce and talk about their family and their faith.
Unfortunately, it was getting late and the kids were tired and becoming very cranky, so I had to cut it short and stop before getting to some topics about which I was looking forward to them discussing. I'm planning on going back tomorrow to finish it.
Some things I learned:
My Grandfather emigrated from Germany when he was 9 years old around 1899. My Grandmother was born in the United States. He did not become a US citizen until 1953.
My father had 4 brothers and 5 sisters. He has 2 brothers who are still alive, the youngest sibling at 81 and one of the middle siblings at 89. His other brothers were in their late 80s and early 90s. No sisters are alive today.
He was born in a farm house in 1934.
Two of my uncles served in WWII. They were separated. One was a mechanic, the other was a medic but was reassigned as a cook. They were reunited in France towards the end of the war.
My Grandfather was not raised in church and was the first to come to the truth when he was in his early 20s.
My uncle was baptized and received the HG at 8 years old. My father was 15 when he was baptized and received the HG. All 5 boys have been active in the ministry in some way or another, whether by Pastoring or assisting.
My uncle told a story my father has told many times. While growing up and when there were guests staying with them and it came time to go to church, their father would tell the guests, "You're more than welcome to join us at church, or you can make yourselves at home here and we will be back in a while." They said their parents made it clear that going to church was a priority and nothing came before it.
The first half took about 25 minutes and I still have several questions to ask them. I imagine the full video will be about 45-60 minutes long, perhaps more.
Once I get this done, while I'm no expert, I want to take some time to edit it and then I plan on uploading it so it can be shared with the family and others who wish to see it. It was a wonderful experience to listen to them talk about their childhood and growing up.
I realize I'm very fortunate to have my father still living, while many may not. If your father is still alive, I would encourage you to sit down with him and let him share his experiences growing up and get it on video or audio so your children can hear it as well.

Re: Heritage of Faith
I've been working on editing the interview down into about 5-10 minute segments by question/topic. I have a few I have completed and uploaded to YouTube, birth/growing up, siblings and society/school growing up. I have a few more left to do: church growing up, marriage advice, past regrets/future dreams and a word for future generations.
The first time I started recording, it was with a small canon camera. The picture is not very good, neither is the audio. It really picked up everything, including the sound of the A/C and my twins screaming in the background. The second time, I used my phone and studio mic. The picture is much better, but the audio could have been a little better, though at least the A/C and background noise isn't as loud.
I've edited footage from both recordings together. This means some answers are doubled, but there were times in which the answers included more information in the first or second recording, so I used both. I was a bit frustrated with my twins screaming in the background while my dad and uncle were talking about their brothers in the war. I almost didn't use it, but I really liked the story so I kept it. (Twins were very tired. It was 8pm and they were ready to go home.)
I plan on doing the same type of introductory interview with my mom, since I don't know much about her side of the family or where they came from either. I'd also like to interview both of my parents, this time not on family but various spiritual/social topics.

I need a better computer or something. It took 5 hours for the video editing program I'm using to export/render a 17 minute video. Only took a couple minutes to upload it to YouTube. One of the reasons I decided to break it down into segments is because of past experience dealing with ridiculous render times.
Trying to decide if I want to post a video here and reveal my identity.
