Christ Jesus warned ...
"A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas ... " (
Matthew 16:4, KJV).
While many have concluded that this statement of our Lord was a reference to His own death, burial and resurrection (and such an inference is not without disputation), nevertheless its "prophetic" implication must not be neglected.
Jesus did not say
"THIS wicked and adulterous generation," rather He used a word which possesses both a present and futuristic implication ...
"A".
Certainly there can be no refutation of the fact that we presently live in
"a wicked and adulterous generation."
But note also the context in which our Lord issued this statement (see
Matthew 16:1-3, KJV) ...
"The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven.
He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?"
In summation, it is my view that our Lord was NOT referring to His own death, burial and resurrection when He uttered these words, rather He was issuing a gentle reminder that one should NOT look for
"signs" in the heavens and attach to them an indication of the nearness of His (2nd) coming. Instead, we are to look for an event wherein someone would be resurrected from the dead; clearly a reference to the event described in
Revelation 13:3, KJV regarding the coming revelation of the Anti-Christ.
