Ryan from Spokane, Washington. In 1906, Ryan had traveled to the Azusa Street Mission and experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. 1/8/1911 (East Oregonian, Pendleton, Oregon, p. 2) Salem, Or., Jan. 7. Rowena Florence Ryan( maiden name Holden, born in Marysville, CA) began proceedings today In the circuit court for Marlon county against her. husband, Martin Lawrence Ryan, alleging as cause for the decree that Martin Lawrence, as a member of the Tongues of Fire" sect, committed her to the care of the Lord and neglected to provide for her and her five children, with the necessaries of life. She was commanded by her husband, she - alleges, to "Obey the Lord and he would provide a home for her and her children," and since he had committed her to the fear of the Lord as aforesaid, he, himself, had considered himself relieved of ail responsibility In the matter. Mrs. Ryan intimates in her complaint that either she failed to obey the Lord as commanded, or that the Lord overlooked her. Anyhow, she has been compelled to seek employment as a telephone girl to support herself and five young ones.
1/9/1911 (East Oregonian, Pendleton, Oregon, p. 6) Salem, Ore., Jan. 9. Because her husband entrusted her care and keeping "to the Lord," as alleged in the complaint, Rowena Florence Ryan has commenced suit for divorce from Martin Lawrence Ryan, a preacher at Spokane, representing the creed known as "Tongues of Fire," or "Religion of Unknown Tongues." The complaint says that she followed her husband on wanderings through many states in the Union until finally he decided to go to Japan and she, with her children, accompanied him to that country. There she states, they had little sustenance and went through trials and hardships, the whole family larder at one time consisting of a cup of rice. She claims that her trials and hardships were made the subject of publication of numerous religious journals until they became a matter of almost national notoriety.
She induced her husband to return to Oregon, she alleges, but later he Went to Spokane. She has five minor children. She alleges that although her husband is able to command a salary of $4000 a year he has provided practically nothing for the family for some time, giving all of his substance to others and stating that the Lord will provide for his wife and children.
Spokane, Jan. 9. The Rev. Martin Lawrence Ryan is in Spokane conducting a series of meetings at the Apostolic Assembly, Front avenue and Howard street. He says he has been a believer in the faith which he preaches for seven years, and is a man of many vocations. He has been a newspaper publisher, book agent, preacher, foreign missionary and wrltf-r. But he has given up all to the preaching of the Apostolic faith. and has depended on the Lord for eustainance. He said last night the Lord had provided pretty well for him, but his wife did not agree with him.
"I returned from Japan December 1 after a three years' mission In that country, going from Spokane with other missionaries, of whom City Plumbing Inspector Edward E. Riley was one, and after a few days at home my wife told me she was not satisfied and lived happier when I was away," said Mr. Ryan last night. "I shall not fight the divorce suit, for if she thinks we had better part, It would not be well for us to live together. There have been times when we did not have all we needed but I believe in this faith and shall stay by it." Mr. Ryan published the rim daily paper in Sprague, he says.
