Then there is another issue... what if a church body decides to embrace them and marry them? While we don't agree, and I don't agree on a moral level, the issue of Freedom of Religion comes into play. Should the "almighty state" have the power to tell a religious body that they can't recognize a sacrament?
Maybe we need a revival of the Holy Roman Empire. I think that most people who are bickering right now would become sniveling whiners pleading for modern America when religious law was indeed imposed on them. Why? Because everyone religio-statist I know supports moral religious laws... but only as long as they are enforcing their beliefs on others. They fail to see that the odds are that we'd get a body of law none of us would agree to.
