WHITE CROW'S HEALING

One day when my father was away, my stepmother became ill and lie on her bed in great pain, unable to rise. I sent for White Crow who brought with him no medicine bag, rattle, not the usual drum; neither did he sing or talk to mother, but merely sat and looked at her as she rolled in pain. After a while he took a small piece of root which he had with him and cut it in two smaller pieces, telling mother to chew one of the pieces and swallow it then chew the second piece and rub it on her chest where the pain was located. This mother did as quickly as possible, for she was seriously ill. Her recovery was almost immediate, for it seemed no more than five minutes before she was up and preparing food for White Crow. I was so delighted and curious, that I offered White Crow my best horse if he would give me the name of the plant. He refused and I then offered him fifty dollars, but I found it was not purchasable at any price.

Standing Bear's report emphasized the power of the medicine, but also suggested White Crow could look inside the woman and see some kind of organic or chemical deficiency and the medicine she needed to overcome her illness. But this ability (if true) should not overshadow the fact that White Crow's knowledge of plants must have been spectacular, since he was able to find the correct root to give her.

It has long been known that many American Indian medicine men were knowledgeable of the healing properties of roots, barks, leaves and plants. Healing by various means is a universal practice and not limited to Christians. Word of Knowledge, discernment of diseases, prescriptions by diagnosis brought restored health to many tribes until the ravages of the white man's world infected them with European or Asian diseases. For reasons unknown they were not able to counter those messengers of death. We might wish to speculate that the time had come to depopulate one strain of the family of man to make way for another ethnic branch of the race of Adam.

Edgar Cayce gave readings that were imminently successful, diagnosed many ills and prescribed cures. Spiritualists have been successful in like manner, also seeing afar, second sight, prophecy, accurate prediction. One notable spiritualist after many years under the sway of his "spirit guide" gave sage advice, 'one must be very careful, the spirits often lie.' Here we have it from the horse's mouth as it were. While under the influence of deceiving spirits, who sometimes tell the truth (when it serves their purpose) will lie in the "next breath.". That agrees with those accounts where men and women listen to deceiving spirits, predicted accurately in some cases but missed the mark by light years in other cases. The "spirits" cannot be trusted.
