Any one a specialist at raising melons?

I am thinking of putting that black ground covering down for my cantalopues and watermellon to run on. Do you know if that will affect my mellons any?

I have learned trying to pull weeds up after they have runners sometimes hurts the plants.

We don't have much luck with melons. 3 or 4 miles down the road there use to be a watermelon patch, but it's been empty for years now.

We've never had any luck growing melons either. :(
Sure wish we could though, love watermelon!
