Serious Weight Problem

Folks there's no getting around this...I'm a serious food addict. I'm not talking about just simple enjoyment of a good meal...I'm talking about a driving controlling addiction.

I've had weight problems since I was a child. I was lonely with few friends and very low self esteem suffering with some major depression that started even before I understood what the word meant.

I didn't go through a teen drinking and drug phase and I didn't even do it in my 20's but about a year and a half ago it dawned on me that I had a serious addiction to eating.

It doesn't help that I'm a foodie and I love to cook. Excuse the expression but cooking shows are like my porn.

I was 320 pounds in 9th grade....and while I lost down to 267 when I was about 24 it has went back up and now I'm over 400.

I'm so ashamed of my size and it's a driving feeling of disgust and failure.

I feel like when people see me that it's what they notice first.

How can I succeed in life when I cant even manage my own weight and appetite?

I can cycle from not eating at all to "EAT ALL THE THINGS!!!"

I get winded just from simple activity now and I know it'll only get worse.

The past three months has been severely emotionally trying and while I've talked about some details there's plenty you guys don't know...It was far worse than I've revealed and my addictive personality has ballooned filling the void the alcohol and pot was filling so it's gone from bad to worse.

I need some focused prayer...I know God is able but I know it'll take effort and restraint on my part...I believe and trust God but it's me I doubt.

I'm well aware of all the health risks...Just please help me pray.

Jedi, I have found one of the things that is most filling is protein, lean protein. And the best diet is lean protein with veggies/salad

The low carb works for me but since losing my job it's been a luxury we can't afford...It's been just food that isn't expensive. Hopefully I can go back on it in the future.

I know what you mean. It's like "They" set the system up so only rich folks can eat right, poor folks have to feed on high-carb filler material. Their judgment slumbereth not...

You have a long way to go, so you have start out slow. And will probably fall off the wagon again and again, multiple times. But that's okay. Just get back on and plug away at it.

The main thing is exercise. Doesn't really matter what (except jogging and long distance slow running, that's s killer. Seriously, it kills, don't do it.) A little bit every day, a little more every week.

You may need to check and see if you aren't borderline diabetic (if yes, don't fret, it CAN be reversed).

Food addiction is basically like any other addiction: a way to find release and comfort and avoid emotional/psychological pain. Self medicating, in other words.

You should find people who have been where you are and are now where you want to be, and talk to them. Preferably in real life, but there are online forums for people recovering from addictions to share their experiences, etc. Just stay away from any kind of 12 step programs, those are basically like cults. I speak from experience.

I can empathize, as someone who's been ~300 my whole adult life, and not far behind that during my school days. Right now, I'm the heaviest I've ever been, at around 340-350 (funnily enough, I typically only eat one meal per day). It's not something I consider a serious problem personally, even though I'd like to shed about 100 lbs, but I can certainly understand where you're coming from. I'll keep you in my prayers.

Re: Serious Weight Problem

Jedi, you might consider looking into binge eating disorder. There are a lot of networks out there for help with it. You are not alone!

Here is one link to get you started:

https://www.eatingdisorderhope.com/i...ating-disorder

An excerpt: "Though binge eating disorder can occur in men and women of normal weight, it often leads to the development of unwanted weight gain or obesity, which can indirectly reinforce further compulsive eating. Men and women suffering with binge eating disorder struggle with emotions of disgust and guilt and often have a related co-morbidity, such as depression or anxiety. The negative feelings that usually accompany binge eating often lead him or her to continue to use food to cope; thus creating a vicious cycle. Managed eating disorder treatments are extremely important.
Causes of Binge Eating Disorder

While the exact cause of binge eating disorder is unknown, there are a variety of factors that are thought to influence the development of this disorder. These factors are:

Biological: Biological abnormalities, such as hormonal irregularities or genetic mutations, may be associated with compulsive eating and food addiction.
Psychological: A strong correlation has been established between depression and binge eating. Body dissatisfaction, low self-esteem, and difficulty coping with feelings can also contribute to binge eating disorder.
Social and Cultural: Traumatic situations, such as a history of sexual abuse, can increase the risk of binge eating. Social pressures to be thin, which are typically influenced through media, can trigger emotional eating. Persons subject to critical comments about their bodies or weight may be especially vulnerable to binge eating disorder."

I vote for a medium low carb diet. I'm able to maintain a weight between 200 - 210 by doing such. Check your blood sugar.

It's not hard to do a medium low carb diet.

If I start to dip below 200 I don't look well.

I used a meal replacement shake in times past. I did light cardio and I dropped some weight. I couldn't tell you how much because I didn't buy a scale. I will say that my gut used to hang over my belt... After the cycle I was able to see my belt again. :)

Last summer I began walking 2-4 miles 5-6 days/wk at the park. In one month I lost 5 pounds. I didn't change anything in my diet which consists of burgers and soda. I stopped walking because the summer got too hot.

I need to get back to doing something. I gained a lot of weight since then. My bp is in a constant state of crisis mode, like I need to be in the E.R.
I was given meds that were like a miracle drug. I began to sleep better. I would get through my work shift without getting sleepy half way through. I ran out of meds. I haven't returned to see the doc because I have gained a few pounds since my last visits.

For better sleep at night: ZMA. It's over the counter, you'll find it at GNC more likely than anywhere else.

Nugenix PM ZMA Testosterone Support. It's vitamin B6, Zinc, and Magnesium. It helps you actually sleep. It's not something that makes you sleepy, necessarily, but it makes your sleep more productive (more restful). Getting sleepy at work is a sign of bad sleep at night. You may go to sleep (or not!) but it's not a deep sleep, so you don't actually get any rest. Thus, you are prone to getting sleepy throughout the day. Your body is trying to tell you what it needs.

Also, sleep apnea will contribute to the problems as well.

Too much electronic em fields will also disturb your sleep. Try limiting time spent in the presence of cell phones, wi-fi, LCD screens, etc. Turn everything OFF when you go to bed. If you need a phone on in case of emergency calls put it as far away from your bed as possible.

Also, if you have a smart meter (look it up) they have been known to interfere with sleep patterns and neurological activity because of the em fields they generate within the home.

Sleep has been a lot better since I got out of EMS. Tons of less work related stress and blood pressure has dropped to healthy levels...It was getting super high.
