this is just weird

I got online today and cannot get into AOL (to read my emails) or to Facebook. But I can get open any other website, including AFF. What's going on?? Anyone know?

What browser do you use?

Safari, but I tried getting on thru IE and also thru Firefox and it was no better.

And poor Justin. He was on a gaming site playing away when I told him he had to get off for a minute so we could re-set the router. He did. And now he can't get on his gaming site anymore. Geesh!

Can you ping or do trace routes to the sites in question?

Does your ISP restrict your bandwidth and you feel that you may be at or over the limit?

That is the most common reason for that kind of problem I think. Although once my firewall was blocking FB for some reason. Took a while to figure it out.

start > run > command > ping facebook.com

There are instances where a ISP DNS servers would be having issues (especially comcast). Try using a 3rd party DNS service like OpenDNS.

I tried that (using the instructions that norcal gave). It didn't fix it. Any other ideas??

It was more of a troubleshooting tip. Not really meant to fix it. When you did the ping, what did it say? Should be multiple lines of roughly the same response over and over.

When random weird stuff like this happens, often a modem and router reboot fixes things.

Re: this is just weird

ok, so this is what is says........

4 rows of Reply from (a string of numbers that I assume are my ISP #??): bytes=32 times=69ms TTL=224

Ping statistics for (the same #):
Packets Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost =0 <0%loss>
Approximate round-trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum =67 ms, Maximum = 69 ms, Average = 67 ms

that's it.

Ok, I found out the problem. Century Link, our internet provider, was having problems in all of Ohio, all of Pennsylvania and areas of St. Louis. It's all fixed now. Thanks for all your helps tho.

Sounds right, sometimes the problem is not your computer.
