My Dinner Failed!!!

Have you ever tried a new recipe and it was HORRIBLE??? I fixed Chicken Marsala tonight, and it was really NOT GOOD. I don't have any wine, and didn't really want to walk around the local grocery store with a bottle, so I had read online that you could use unsweetened red grape juice and you couldn't tell the difference. Well, someone lied! It was awful - no flavor and very pink and gooey. At least the other stuff was good - roasted parmesan potatoes and broccoli. And I made an Apple Crunch dessert, so I kind of redeemed myself. I just hate it when you spend all that time and then it's YUCKY! Glad I didn't spend a lot of money too.

Anyone else want to share a failure story and make me feel better?:bigbaby

Sorry! Yes, I have messed up. My latest thing was changing an oatmeal cookie recipe. They were so sweet you could only eat one. LOL!

I got so disgusted with cooking a few years ago that I practically gave it for months!...Once I made a pecan pie and forgot to put in the 2/3 cup of Karo syrup it was a disaster.

Here are some Chicken Masada Recipes...You may not need them...I am sorry your dinner turned out badly.

Sherri,

I tired making chili for the first time a couple of weeks ago-

I have never made chili before-as it is really not my favorite thing.

I soaked the beans for almost 2 days- cooked them for hours before adding ground beef ect.

I started it at 9 am and when it was all said and done by 5pm those stupid beans were still firm.

I am clueless as to what went wrong :-(

Maybe water added to the mix would help?:christmoose

Every once and awhile I will try something that really looks good- and it turns out horrible. My husband is very kind and appreciative though and never complains. I can tell when he doesn't like something - he does not go back for seconds.

I never put dried beans in chili...I use kidney beans and chili beans.

I do cook dried beans but don't put them in chili.

Sorry your chili didn't turn out well.

The only thing that could have happened is that they were a sorry bag of beans. I use a brand called Casserole. They are grown in Colorado.

The trick is to use canned beans! I add one or two cans of pinto beans to any chili I make. Love Chili!

Apparently, my nephew didn't mind. He took the tray home after Thanksgiving dinner. I don't know why substituting half brown sugar for all white sugar would make a difference.

YES!

I found a new recipe for a crock pot chicken dish that sounded sooooo good. It was terrible.............even in the crock pot the chicken was dry and tasteless.

The mango, coconut rice that I made to go with it was good though!

I tried making gravy a few months ago. Failed at making gravy, but made a fine combination paste, dumplings, bread and goo! And thats exactly how it tasted. Thats before I learned you cook nothing on high. Making gravy on HIGH does not a good gravy make.

One time, I made some chocolate chip bars in a old oven we had. There was something wrong with the oven. The bars looked absolutely beautiful but when you put a knife in, you had to just jam it in and then you could pwing it and it would go Dong! We had a really good laugh over that one!

Yes!

I've had TWO failures in the last month!

I found a recipe for fudge on the internet that looked scrumptous.........I still don't know how it could have turned out so horrible!

Also, I made a walnut cake that I thought would be good. I wasted a whole pound of walnuts. My husband pretended to like them both!

Re: My Dinner Failed!!!

One time I made biscuits that called for either baking soda or baking powder. I can't remember which. But whichever it was, I used the opposite. They were true hockey pucks!! Even the dog wouldn't eat them!

The other day I made steaks using my George Foreman. They were GOOD steaks! 2" thick. Those little round ones that you put the bacon around. What are they called? I don't remember, but I know they are expensive! Walt's Company he works for gave them to us. So I cooked them on GF. My bro-in-law, the chef was here. He told me they were done just medium. So I took them off. He lied! They were running blood all over the place! That was fine with him and Walt and Keith. But I want mine PINK, not swimming. So I put mine back on George. By the time I took it off, I had shoe leather. GEeesh!!

By the way, try making your chili without beans. It's way better that way :)

unsweetened grape juice is still sweet. It has sugers in it.

One time I made Chicken Pot Pie - enough for 13 people and I forgot the chicken. They all had a big laugh about that. My niece even composed a song about it that they still sing today at all major holidays. LOL!

My chili is awesome and I use canned Bush Chili Beans. That is one thing that I CAN cook and I make it sweet. We seem to like anything tomato-ish with some sweetness to it, including pasta sauces.

Our honeymoon:

Day One: Nevermind

Day two...

lunch is on me - I had brought bacon wrapped fillet Mignon...

for a special treat I also bacon wrapped four chunks of cheddar cheese...

put it all on the grill...

BIG FIRE...

no food.

Cheese is quite combustible!

Not often. but then I am trained to avoid messing up. =)

NEVER believe everything you read online. A lot of people have very bad taste. =)

sorry you had this experience. Just break down and get a bottle. Who cares if you buy wine?

My sisters pastor got up church and told them that if anyone heard a rumor about him being in a liquor store it was probably true. His daughter-in-law and wife had sent him to pick up something they needed for a dish and the only place he could think of that was close that would have it was a liquor store. He did not even know what he was buying. He went in and told the clerk what he needed and had to take his word for it that it was the right stuff. But then he and his church are not uptight. conservative but not uptight.

When we were on staff at a UPC church in Memphis from 1980-1984, I worked for Xerox. I had to host all the big-wig parties and plan them all, because I was the personal assistant to the big boss. I had to do a Wine & Cheese party once, and I was mortified. I had to go in the liquor store and buy stuff that I didn't know ANYTHING about and I just knew that someone would drive by and see me and that my hubby would lose his job. LOL! But I survived and my boss always made sure I had a big Diet Coke to drink.

After taking a strong stand against alcohol, I could NEVER buy wine in the local grocery store. I wouldn't want anyone to think we were hypocrites, even though I would know it was just for cooking. Just better to leave some things alone, IMO. We are smack in the middle of the Bible Belt.

WELL then it is time to loosen the belt and stand more balanced on alcohol. =)

I've had my share of disasters, but the best one in our family wasn't mine. I won't say whose, cuz I'd be in the dog house if she found out I posted it to the world, but: this anonymous lady was making chili. Hmmm. No chili powder in the pantry. No problem, my son tells her: cayenne pepper is the same thing, different name. So she subbed it, tablespoon for tablespoon.

Man, that was some hot chili! 5 alarm, at least! Coulda used that stuff as paint remover!
