No ma'am I don't think that's it at all. I've spoken with him and I'm connected with him as our stories are similar. He did believe and preached it as I did but there came a time in his life, and mine, where he questioned and there was nothing there besides faith to back it up.

Okay, in the context of the quote that makes sense of what he was saying. Thanks for clarifying.

During his speeches, he talks about the process of leaving his preacher job. “If you don’t believe, then you will be like me – you’ll suddenly find yourself where you only have two choices,” DeWitt told a group in Johnson County, Kansas, earlier this year.

“You can either be honest that you don’t believe ... or you can pretend that you do,” he said. “Which is what so many people are doing and that is called faith.”

How does one realize they are atheist? Is that like realizing one is gay?

No, not even close and that's a poor comparison imho. It's when you accept the fact that there is no evidence outside of faith that anyone is there.

So, you lose your faith? Or decide there is no God?

He's speaking more towards even what I did myself. You keep wanting to believe thst god is there and "live by faith not by sight" even though deep down you feel that there is nothing there. In other words do you step out and say "I no longer believe" or do you deny your disbelief and try to walk by faith and pretend something is there when you feel there isn't.

Personally speaking I didn't lose my faith I willingly gave it up because I felt that there was nothing/no one there after all.
