Re: Sex On Church Day
DM,
What you need to understand is that God expects married couples to make the needs of their spouse (including sexual needs) a priority. Paul acknowledged that single men and women could focus on the "things of the Lord", but those who are married must care about the things of the "world", so they can please their spouse. This is not presented as a bad thing; just matter-of-factly, as an acknowledgement of the responsibilities of marriage. I Corinthians 7:32-33 But I would have you without carefulness. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord: ...But he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. ...There is difference also between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit: but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. There's nothing BAD in being married and considering the needs of your spouse, and God acknowledges that this may somewhat interfere with devotion to the "things of the Lord." This is consistent with the line of thought where a man or woman would get permission from their spouse to be separate for a time of prayer and fasting--but again--they must have permission. Not God's permission; permission from their spouse. This illustrates the importance God places on the marital relationship and their obligations to one another. It's very interesting to me that God Himself only endorses sexual separation from your spouse for a spiritual cause if your spouse is willing to give you permission. |
