"For" is a bad rendering because it means anti which we know means "instead of, in place of (something)" the something in this case is the "peribolaion" meaning "a covering thrown around, a wrapper, a mantle, a veil" It couldve been customary for them to wear a veil but thats not what's being discussed here. This is clearly about hair. Verse 15 gives the conclusion and the context, I mean it says its shameful. So to have cut hair is shameful when its her glory. What's the purpose of the creation reference otherwise Eve didn't have a covering bro, only until after the fall maybe. But we should conclude to cut a womans hair is to disregard her glory point blank period. End of story to advise someone otherwise is to just give your opinion. And if your ok with it, I am too but sounds like a dangerous thing to do if your wrong. |

IF her hair is the covering Paul is commanding, then he is speaking nonsense: "If the woman cuts her hair off, then let her ALSO cut her hair off"????? Makes no sense. Paul's point is not that the woman ought to have long hair (although he acknowledges that she ought to), but rather that she ought to be covered when praying or prophesying. And that is she refuses to cover her head, she might as well just cut her hair. If she wants to act like a man in the assembly, she might as well go all the way and wear her hair like a man, too. but of course, that would be shameful. Therefore, LET HER BE COVERED. |

Nature teaches a woman to be covered. It does this by the fact that, according to nature, having long hair is a glory to her. It is given her as a covering. This is a natural covering. Not a head covering, but a peribolaion, a shawl or mantle, a "wrap around". And Paul uses this lesson from nature as a support to his argument for the head covering. He is saying "Look, you women have long hair, it's proper and beautiful, it's a natural mantle or shawl, so therefore you need to COVER THE HEAD WHEN PRAYING. Because, if you pray uncovered, it's AS IF you had been shorn like a sheep. You don't want to cover your head? Fine then, cut off your hair, too. Oh, that would be unseemly? Then cover your head."

Present active subjunctive of komaō (from komē, hair), old verb, same contraction (̇aēîāi) as the indicative (aei ̂ āi), but subjunctive here with ean in third class condition. Long hair is a glory to a woman and a disgrace to a man (as we still feel). The long-haired man! There is a papyrus example of a priest accused of letting his hair grow long and of wearing woollen garments. For a covering (anti peribolaiou). Old word from periballō to fling around, as a mantle (Heb_1:12) or a covering or veil as here. It is not in the place of a veil, but answering to (anti, in the sense of anti in Joh_1:16), as a permanent endowment (dedotai, perfect passive indicative). |
